PRIVACY - GENERAL INFORMATION When teachers register with TechCONNECT, submit an online form to request a catalog, respond to a survey, or communicate with us for any other reason, we add their e-mail and postal addresses to our electronic mailing list so that, from time to time, we can send them information about new features, additions, and changes to our products and/or Web site. We also use information collected from registered members at the point of registration to mark them as unique users of TechCONNECT in order to preserve the security and integrity of the network. We do not collect e-mail or postal addresses from students. Please be assured that we take your concerns about privacy quite seriously, and we will make every reasonable effort to protect your privacy. To that end, The McGraw-Hill Companies has developed a comprehensive Customer Privacy Notice. TechCONNECT and all other divisions of The McGraw-Hill Companies adhere to this policy. CHILDREN'S ONLINE PRIVACY PROTECTION ACT (COPPA) The Federal Trade Commission's Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) became effective April 21, 2000. This act provides regulations that apply to the online collection of personal information from children under the age of 13. In order to comply with COPPA, TechCONNECT only requires students to register using a first name and last initial. No other personally identifiable information will be collected in order to gain admission to the site. To further protect the privacy of children, TechCONNECT encrypts all notes or comments transmitted online between a student and his/her teacher and encrypts files submitted by a student into his/her online Portfolio. These notes and files are secure and inaccessible to everyone (except the author student and his/her teacher). INFORMATION COLLECTED FROM CHILDREN RELATING TO CHILDREN When children register with TechCONNECT, we use the information collected to mark them as unique users within TechCONNECT to preserve the security and integrity of the network. We collect the following information from children at the point of registration: First Name and Last Initial (used to identify children as unique users within TechCONNECT) Member Name (a combination of at least 6 letters OR numbers, chris1 is a valid member name) Password (a combination of at least 6 letters AND numbers, password must contain at least one number, chris1 is a valid password, password is not revealed at any point within the network) Identity Question (a list of identity questions are presented; identity questions are used to recover access if a user loses his/her password; an answer to an identity question may be any combination of letters or numbers) INFORMATION COLLECTED FROM TEACHERS RELATING TO CHILDREN In order to provide a link between a teacher and his/her students in TechCONNECT, teachers are required to set up classes. By setting up a class, a random alphanumeric Class Key is generated and distributed to students. This Class Key is entered by the student and links the student to his/her teacher. Teachers will also review and comment on projects and assessments submitted online by his/her students, as described below. Assessments (a teacher may choose to deliver assessments online; a record of the student's completed assessments are retained in the student's Portfolio) Portfolio Comments (a student's Portfolio of work may be viewed by the teacher, and encrypted comments may be transmitted between a teacher and student) Note: The above information is only accessible to the teacher and the student after logging onto the network using a secure member name and password. We collect the following information from teachers at the point of registration: Title, First Name, and Last Name (used to identify teachers as unique users within TechCONNECT) Member Name (a combination of at least 6 letters OR numbers, chris1 is a valid member name) Password (a combination of at least 6 letters AND numbers, password must contain at least one number, chris1 is a valid password, password is not revealed at any point within the network) Identity Question (a list of identity questions are presented; identity questions are used to recover access if a user loses his/her password; an answer to an identity question may be any combination of letters or numbers) E-mail Address (used to confirm registration; also used to communicate information about new features, additions, and changes to TechCONNECT) Home State (used to determine which state standards apply to that teacher, required) Note: only the member name and the e-mail address are known to TechCONNECT administrators, and any information collected from members will not be distributed or shared with persons or companies outside McGraw-Hill. REVIEW AND REMOVAL OF TEACHER OR CHILD INFORMATION Users may review and modify their information within TechCONNECT. In order to perform the aforementioned actions, students and teachers may view their information in the Profile area and perform the action online. USE OF COOKIES AND ONWARD TRANSFER TechCONNECT does not use permanent cookies. However, TechCONNECT does use a temporary user session object or "temporary cookie". This temporary cookie stores a user's member name and password while visiting TechCONNECT. This user session object allows a user to visit various pages within the secure network without having to enter his or her member name and password on every page that he/she visits. The temporary cookie expires when a user logs out of TechCONNECT or after a period of inactivity within TechCONNECT. EXTERNAL LINKS TechCONNECT features many links to other Web sites as part of its rich array of educational offerings. While we have endeavored to provide links to sites providing the highest level of educational material available on the Web, TechCONNECT cannot make any guarantees with respect to the actions or policies of those sites that links are provided for. SECURITY TechCONNECT implements "state of the art" security and encryption technologies available. TechCONNECT makes every effort to provide a safe and secure community for its users.
