TechCONNECT – A Middle School Technology Applications
Program
![]()
Lessons from the middle school curriculum from The CyberSmart! School Program have
been incorporated into TechCONNECT.
The CyberSmart!
Curriculum, a free resource for K-8 teachers, addresses technology literacy
head-on by providing the necessary critical thinking skills for safe,
responsible and effective technology use. Distributed free of charge at http://www.cybersmartcurriculum.org,
the Curriculum includes downloadable student activity sheets and complete
teacher lesson plans for both offline and online lessons. Sixty-five original,
standards-based lessons are non-sequential and easily integrated—in whole or in part—by social
studies, science, media or technology teachers, as well as school librarians.
Organized
in five units, each unit focuses on an important set of critical skills in
support of all core academic subject areas:
Safety and Security:
How can the Internet be used safely?
Manners
and Cybercitizenship:
What are students’ social, legal and ethical responsibilities?
Advertising and Privacy: How can students identify commercial messages
and safeguard their privacy?
Research: What strategies should students know to
effectively use the Internet as a research tool?
Technology: What should students know about the
past, present and future of the Internet?
The CyberSmart! Curriculum helps educators integrate technology
naturally and effortlessly as Web-based information extends textbook lessons
into cyberspace. CyberSmart also
provides Web-based professional development based on its Curriculum content.
T.H.E.

an array of consulting services. Headed by a nationally known
expert in education and technology in education, Dr. Geoffrey H. Fletcher,
T.H.E. Institute uses years of classroom, central office, university and state
department of education experience to bring the highest-quality professional
development and consulting possible to educators and businesses around the
world. TechCONNECT
has drawn upon the expertise of the T.H.E. Institute to provide a valuable
professional development component to the program. For more about the T.H.E. Institute, visit
its Web site at www.thejournal.com/institute/
The Plano ISD
has a national reputation for commitment to excellence in technology education
and for dedication to the principle of integrating technology throughout the
school curriculum. The district consistently demonstrates examples of best
practices in technology implementation and integration. Many of Plano ISD’s
online teacher resources for integrating technology into the core curriculum
areas have been incorporated into TechCONNECT
activities. The Plano ISD Web site (http://www.pisd.edu/) is an exemplary model for
content that supports teachers, students and the wider community, for clarity
in its organization, and for ease of usability.
